UNITY Honors Doug Mitchell
UNITY Supporter honored for training of journalists of color
McLean, VA, August 16, 2009 - UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc., and its alliance partners, the Asian American Journalists Association, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Native American Journalists Association collectively honored UNITY supporter Doug Mitchell for his work on the student projects.
At the AAJA Silent Auction Reception on Friday, August 14, in Boston, UNITY executive director Onica N. Makwakwa, NAJA representative Brian Bull, and NAHJ executive director Iván Román each detailed their experiences with Mitchell and expressed their gratitude for his dedication over the years.
Mitchell has worked on each UNITY convention as a student projects mentor, starting at UNITY '94 in Atlanta. Since then, Mitchell has volunteered at all UNITY conventions as well as at numerous alliance member conventions. Last year, he was the mastermind of the new convergence project at UNITY '08 bringing a new innovative model to the student newsroom that maximized each student's learning opportunities on all platforms.
"We are grateful for Doug's tireless efforts to train the next generation of journalists of color," said UNITY executive director Onica N. Makwakwa. "Providing meaningful hands-on experience to young people in the journalism field is essential to sustaining a healthy pipeline of journalists of color."
