McLean, Va. (3/4/09) - UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc. stands together with the Asian American Journalists Association in urging for the immediate release of Roxana Saberi, a U.S. journalist based in Iran. Ms. Saberi, has been held by the Iranian government for the last month without any announced charges.
Ms. Saberi, a past UNITY students project participant in 1999, is a freelance reporter and has lived in Iran for the last six years; she was previously with NPR.
"A free press is one of the hallmarks of a society that respects human rights. We are therefore troubled by the detaining of journalists without any given reason," said UNITY president Rafael Olmeda.
"We urge the Iranian government to provide an immediate explanation as to why she is being held. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ms. Saberi and her family during this difficult time, and we hope to see her released without delay."
