The 1950s Act of Congress resulted in the removal of thousands of Native American people from their reservations into American cities.  American Indians, cut off from families, culture and traditions arrived to these cities not knowing what struggles awaited them in the future.

1958 marked the birth of the American Indian Women´s Service League created by women concerned with the conditions of their people.  After opening a small storefront office the AIWSL offcially became the Seattle Indian Center in 1972.

Since then SIC has offered support to many people.  In 1998 alone, the staff at SIC provided 108,000 units of service for over 22,000 people in all areas of the world.  Services are available for all age groups from infants to the elderly.
