FAQs

What is the Challenge Fund for Journalism?
It is a grant program to help journalism organizations broaden their base of financial support through challenge grants, fundraising training and organizational development coaching.  The Challenge Fund for Journalism also assists journalism organizations in strengthening their leadership and board, organizational infrastructure and financial resources through capacity building endeavors, all designed to promote financial sustainability.

The challenge grants require a 1:1, 1:1.5 or 1:2 match. The Challenge Fund for Journalism provides many other opportunities for grantees including networking with other journalism organizations and board development and training sessions.  The Challenge Fund for Journalism is now on its fourth cycle, and UNITY participated in the first cycle.  The alliance partners have all participated in one of the past cycles as well.

Who funds the Challenge Fund?
The funders of the Challenge Fund for Journalism are: the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the McCormick Tribune Foundation and the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.

Who facilitates the Challenge Fund?
The Challenge Fund is facilitated by the TCC Group.  They are responsible for disbursing the grants funds, coaching grantees, and acting as a liaison between the grantees and the funders.

What is the Challenge Fund grant period?
Donations to count towards the Challenge Fund must be received between August 8, 2007 and August 8, 2008.

What counts as a Challenge Fund donation?
Donations that count towards the Challenge Fund are limited to new donors from August 2004 on.  For example, if someone had donated $50 in July 2004, and donated $50 in November 2007, their $50 donation would count towards the match.  If someone donated $50 in September 2004 and donated $50 in November 2007, their donation would not count towards the match.
